A historic unveiling

1st Mar 2017

February 2017 saw the grand unveiling of an official plaque from the Birmingham Civic Society confirming our status as the oldest working cinema in the UK, established on 27th December 1909.

Acclaimed British director Ben Wheatley joined fellow director and Electric Cinema owner Tom Lawes for the official unveiling on Wednesday, which was introduced by Birmingham Civic Society chairman Gavin Orton.

The plaque lists many of the former names of the cinema across its illustrious history - The Jacey, The Tivoli, The Select, The Tatler and The Classic - and has been placed just outside our foyer for visitors to the city and the cinema to enjoy.
